This may be old to some or new to some, but all the same, I’d like to share.
Since the discovery of gundam.eu streaming (I’m new to things, sorry), me and my friends at this blog had some discussion about the whole thing. Marchy said that’s the idea how clubboxes record and produce raw videos. Cool friend! Anyway, that’s what marchy said. If you wish to follow our discussion, click here. That post has the list of channels also and the directions how to play the stream on Windows Media Player and Winamp. This post is about VLC. How to watch the streams on VLC and save it at the same time for, I don’t know, sharing or avoiding redownloading raws for bandwidth’s sake?
If you’re a technophobe, don’t worry, that’s what downloading is for. But, but, my friend Pat (remember her when I did the gogobox/clubbox tutorial thing?), she somehow figured out how to record it anyway, even without my help. Take that as inspiration. So, Let’s go.
- Start VLC (or install it if you haven’t yet).
- Press CTRL+N (File >> Open Network Stream..)
- A dialog will appear, click on Network. Select HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS.
- Type the streaming address. For example, if you wish to watch a TBS show, type: mms://stream.gundam.eu/tbs. Click OK.

- Wait a little while, depending on your connection status. Alas, the stream should show up. Believe me, this is TBS.

Now, how to save it. You must note, that we can only save this in .ASF and not .AVI. Well, that’s all I know for now, but you can convert it afterwards to AVI. If you found a better way, good for you, or maybe help us know how? As Marchy said, bigtime uploaders uses more advance tools (that you need to buy). If you don’t want to buy and can read more, here goes.
- Repeating until step #4 in the above instruction, go down Advanced options, check Stream/Save, click Settings. Another screen (aka nightmares for technophobes) will appear.

- Check Play locally and File on Outputs frame. On filename, choose a desired filename and make sure extension is ASF. Under Encapsulation Method frame, select ASF. I think you might use other format, but due to time contraints writing, I haven’t tried. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. Yes, I forgot that reminder applies for this tutorial as well. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. Don’t blame me if something crashes or anything. And this tutorial is not for dialup users.
Click OK. Click OK again.

- It will start streaming the show again. But this time, if you check your directory where you’re supposed to save your output file, it should be there.

- Behold, It’s there! If not, there’s obviously something wrong.
I recorded a sample 02:00 minute video, the output resulted to 6.85MB, for 480×270 resolution video. Another one is 15.9MB for 04:32 minutes in length. If you wanna see the file (in ASF, of course), here it is in Divshare. You can convert ASF to AVI and may be share your videos to everybody. Or create (more) instant icons. Picspam, drool, anyway you want to do with it. At least file sizes will be different this time since they don’t all come now from the same clubboxes.
Thanks to Marchy and Pat and Internet access at the office, no matter how limited it is (I can’t download and email, but I can blog at least
) If everything’s still unclear to you, forget about this post. Take it as my excuse to just type random things and take screenshots. Now, I’m back to work.

[...] For watching and saving streams in VLC, please see this post. [...]
i’m at work but im definitely gonna try it at home! *at my own risk* LOL
it may well be the end of my problems!
thanks a lot xx
yeah, you don’t know how bothered I am not to get caught while taking screenshots. and I can’t screen-shoot VLC properly. don’t be too afraid, it worked for a few people. my friend was flailing last night when she recorded AnS.
Wow thanks so so much for this!!! Will def. try it out when I’m at home! Arigatou~!! m(_ _)m
thanks, I hope it works for you! And if it does, please tell me so I know my directions were clear enough not only for me, aheheh!
hello im using mac, i can hear some sounds then no video ltr, after that nth comes out….. T_T
Jocelyn, I don’t own a Mac, and I don’t understand if your problem is watching the video or saving it… if it’s watching, please try using Quicktime.
thanks a lot !! i’ve tried it and it works *huuugs*
and i’m using a software called “Ultra Video Joiner” to convert the asf to avi or mpeg. the quality isnt bad (MQ maybe), its so satisfaying!! thanks again !!
finally, kretortd, thanks for telling me it worked, hahaha! yep, the quality is actually good, almost if not the same as MQ files from CBs, so be careful on bandwidth issues.
ooohhh…arigatou nee-chanXD
i tried it on Windows Media Player and yeyy it worksXDD
so much better than TVU or KeyholeXDD
arigatou again!
yey! glad to know it worked for you kimmy! but studies first before Sho, ok? hehehe! i’m glad it helped many fans!
wow…thank you lots! i was searching for anything that works after tvu stopped streaming tbs, ntv and fuji. this is very helpful!
thanks for taking time to say it worked for you!
I can only hear the audio without video T_T why?!
umm… THANK YOU!! I was wondering what to do since TVU deleted their Japanese channels, and Keyhole just sucks..
you’re welcome Eggchan, have fun!
Takiya, do you have a fast and stable connection?
if you guys familiar with the codec… you can save the file into MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MP4 files… this is for those who favors those 3 file types.
for MPEG-1,
at the settings, tick play locally, tick file
browse to desktop or whatever folder you want to put the file in
name the file as filename.mpg
choose MPEG-1
tick video codec mp1v
tick audio codec mpga
then click ok as usual
for MPEG-2,
at the settings, tick play locally, tick file
browse to desktop or whatever folder you want to put the file in
name the file as filename.mpg
choose MPEG TS
tick video codec mp2v
tick audio codec mp2a
then click ok as usual
for MP4,
at the settings, tick play locally, tick file
browse to desktop or whatever folder you want to put the file in
name the file as filename.mp4
choose MPEG-1
tick video codec mp4v
tick audio codec mp4a
then click ok as usual
it looks complicated but it’s not at all if you’re used with the codecs… like mp4 video codec, was simplified into mp4v and mp4 audio codec, was simplified into mp4a… haha… i’m giving almost all of my secrets…
hahaha! it’s ok marchy, I must be the one feeling bad coz I post this even though I myself could not follow it at home coz *goshmyinternetspeed!*. I learned sharing without anything in return from you, ahihi!
Hello~
I have a little question ^.^;;
What version of VLC are you using?
Thank you so much for the tutorial ^_^
Koori, I’m not sure anymore coz I’m at home right now, but I did the tutorial while at work. I’m not sure if they’re the same version but here it is:
VLC media player 0.8.6.d (wxWidgets interface)
I think the latest is a version 0.9.3 now. I’ll check it tomorrow again. having problems?
i love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
i love you too oreiji! so sad you’re not here in WP anymore…
the latest version for windows is 0.9.2… it has more options… to save, use the drop down box in the bottom (besides the play button), choose [convert]… i used this version now, but i also used to use the older versions…
Thank you ^__^
I downloaded the latest version but the dialog windows are different hehe ñ.ñ;; I’ll try to download the 0.8.6.d version ^_^
Thanks =D
@marchlavender: Waa~ Thank you so much, I’ll try that ^__^
weird, there’s a new 0.9.4 version just released, hmm, now? hahah~
maybe this post needs a major revision.. but I can’t edit it now coz my connection dies and resurrect, dies and resurrect here at home
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VLC_media_player
0.9.4 is just released today… it’s like 0.9.3… both are stable for linux… but 0.9.3 is just the latest version of TVU, went crazy sometimes with WINDOWS…
in case they don’t work, the site has the old versions in it. I don’t upgrade things unless it doesn’t work. older versions are always better and free of hidden spy…ware.
very true ace… even 0.9.2 pissed me off to the star! we can get better vids with 0.8.+++ versions than the 0.9.+++ versions… 0.9.3 is a trash! and gosh! 0.9.4 is so not working with WINDOWS, it couldn’t capture MPEG-1, MPEG-2, WMV or MP4 correctly… well, i guess LINUX is their target so we couldn’t blame them…
I got a software at office Any Video Converter an old version and it works fine. Then I upgraded and lost the original installer, now I couldn’t install the same thing at my laptop. I shouldn’t just trust new releases hahah!
tomorrow, I’m going to recompile all our conversations and add it to the post… maybe it could help add info to the fans.. but now, I think I better rest.. my work is every morning now instead of afternoons.. marchy, if anyone asks anything and you’re still up, feel free to answer them.
no problem… but with 0.9.4, you can save into avi format nicely, with just a click… so, that’s all i care…
at least, it gives us a cool option here…
this is wonderful, thanks for sharing the tutorial!
I hope you find it all useful, esp now that Nino’s drama is coming up! thanks litany!
Thanks for the tutorial, I was so desperate after all Japanese channels were removed from TVU. I had a brief try this morning and it works ! Can’t wait to watch my dear Kanjani in action on Asahi next saturday !!
learned a new trick. komahsumida…
Ate Ace, thanks. No need for KeyHole (no more virus~!) I love you, Ate Ace. No more new programs to install and its so easy.
Chiara! buti gumana sayo! I hope you can enjoy it while it’s there..;)
Pammy! yey! now you can record independently WGM and just wait for softsubs/translations hahaha! watch your drool rate though… my Joongbo clips, don’t forget!
btw, I can’t read your pm right now at the office, be back for it later!
blue eyes, glad it helped even non-Arashi fans!
muzui >_>
hello!!
sorry to disturb you but…
can i ask what program you use to convert .asf into .avi?
^^
Oreiji, no problem, at home I use SUPER converter from different types to another. But this is I think another version I haven’t tried yet.
http://www.brothersoft.com/super-59461.html
If you read the specs, you can see that it automatically play and save mms:// protocols so maybe you can save automatically, no need to convert but I haven’t tried this feature coz I use old version. hope this helps.
thank youuuuuuuuu
and thank you for being so fast!!! ^_^
you’re welcome! I’m actually at work so I can’t download the program to verify or test, but I hope it works for you.. have fun! oh, and tell me if it doesn’t work as expected so I wouldn’t recommend it if someone asks again. thanks!
i’ll do that!!!
thanks againnnnn ^_____^
gahhhh i keep getting an error when trying to convert the files T___T
did you change any of the parameters?
sorry for disturbing you at work T_____T
I can’t use it at work coz I can’t download exe files… that’s how strict the company is… but if you check again the file and convert, it will continue… I also get that message on the old version.. I don’t know about this one.
ohhh i see.
thanks!! i’ll try that!! ^_____^
kyaaaa sugoi!!!!!!!!!!
it works!!!!
records directly to avi!!!
it’s a bit annoying because you can’t see what you’re recording, it just records…but still, really really good!!! thank you so much, you saved me´!!!!! XD
yey! I’m glad to hear it worked for you! btw, I posted something about the streams and some problems, I hope you can consider it in case you got problems someday! enjoy, hope you could continue spreading Arashi love!
hello! unforunately i cant see this “HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS” option in my vlc. in fact, i cant see any. Its kinda almost diff even though i just downloaded the latest ver.
and wma wont work either!! ahhh
please help me ): thanks!
Hello! For some reason, my quicktime and vlc player won’t show the stream at all… its been about ten minutes and nothing has shown up… I’m using a mac. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
Hi Sugi, I’m not sure if these still works since it’s been a while since this ‘news’ spread to the communities. Their servers clogged up due to too many people accessing the streams
